Sen avulla selvitet\u00e4\u00e4n, miten rakenneosat ovat j\u00e4rjestyneet aineissa ja millaisia s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6llisi\u00e4 rakenteita ne muodostavat. Tietoa rakenteesta saadaan mittaamalla aineeseen kohdistetun r\u00f6ntgen-, neutroni- tai elektronis\u00e4teilyn sirontaa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perinteisess\u00e4 r\u00f6ntgendiffraktiossa tutkitaan yksitt\u00e4isi\u00e4 kiteit\u00e4 tai jauhen\u00e4ytteit\u00e4, jolloin voidaan m\u00e4\u00e4ritt\u00e4\u00e4 tarkka kolmiulotteinen atomirakenne tai esimerkiksi tunnistaa jauhen\u00e4ytteen sis\u00e4lt\u00e4m\u00e4t yhdisteet ja niiden suhteelliset m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4t n\u00e4ytteess\u00e4. Muita r\u00f6ntgensirontaan perustuvia menetelmi\u00e4 ovat SAXS<strong> <\/strong>(Small-Angle X-ray Scattering) ja WAXS (Wide-Angle X-ray Scattering). SAXS-menetelm\u00e4 soveltuu erityisesti suurempien rakenteiden, kuten nanopartikkelien, huokoisten materiaalien tai biomolekyylien kokonaisrakenteen tutkimiseen. WAXS puolestaan antaa tietoa aineen atomitason j\u00e4rjestymisest\u00e4 ja kiteisyydest\u00e4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>N\u00e4iden menetelmien avulla voidaan tutkia materiaalien rakennetta eri pituusskaaloissa, atomitasolta nanometreihin saakka.
